Tiny Systems that Reduce Friction

Updated: Feb 18

Be Kind to Your Today and Tomorrow Selves - You Deserve It

================================================================

In a life that sometimes feels like a death by a thousand cuts, let’s talk about some tiny things you can do to reduce friction and elevate your daily life. Remember, elevation isn’t about doing more. It’s about removing the unnecessary so the intentional feels luxurious.

Small Changes, Big Lift

  1. Create Convenience in Small Places

One fast charger per space where you spend the most time will keep your mobile device charged for those moments when electricity is scarce. Keep that phone on the charger, not near your person.

  2. Declutter Your Drawers

Empty that unmentionable and sock drawer. Pare it down to two or three styles that you like. No time wasted matching or rummaging through to find your favorites is a huge lift for such a small change.

  3. Match Your Hangers

Make your hangers match in style and color. You’ll be surprised by how powerful this simple act can be.

Everyday Luxury

  1. Use That Guest Towel

Treat yourself to that experience daily. After all, we're all guests here! The same goes for those nice dishes. Eat that mac n cheese on a china plate. You deserve it!

  2. Upgrade Your Utensils

Drink from a ridiculously ornate goblet (do not call it a 'glass') or a fancy coffee mug. Make your coffee or tea an experience, not just a commodity. Ditch the Keurig and invest in an espresso machine.

  3. Light a Taper Candle

A real wax candle can elevate boring tasks. Fold laundry or enjoy dinner (OFF THAT @#$@ CHINA) during candlelight. It’s soothing and feels luxurious.

Personal Presentation

  1. Have a Signature Style

Develop a predictable manner of dress for public outings. Mine is a crazy shirt, dark jeans (blue or black), and polished shoes. A light scent of cologne and trimmed nails complete the look. Remember, kings and queens get manicures and pedicures—you should too!

  2. Wear a Watch

Always wear a watch. Don’t look at your phone for the time; you don’t need another excuse to check that screen.

  3. Send Your Clothes for Dry Cleaning

It may be pricey, but you’ll do less laundry and have better-looking, longer-lasting clothes.

Social Micro-Upgrades

  1. Engage with Names

When at a restaurant or business with name tags, use their name at least once. Ask, "How are things going here?" After they respond, return the question: "How are things going over there?"

  2. Pause Before Replying

Take a moment of silence before responding. Listening is a vital part of conversation and often more important than talking.

  3. Acknowledge with "You're Right!"

Instead of saying "I know," use "You're right!" It makes the other person feel like they’re giving you a gift of information, not just recycling something new.

Prepare for Tomorrow

  1. Lay Out Your Clothes

Put out your clothes the night before, so you know exactly what you’re wearing.

  2. Manage Soiled Clothing

Handle your dirty clothes before bed to prevent stains.

  3. Shower Before Bed

Take a shower before you sleep, not when you wake up.

How Do You Treat Yourself?

How do you spend time in your day to treat yourself? How is your today self kind to your tomorrow self? I’d love to hear your ideas!
